About
Workshop Bilk Gallery is open from Wednesday to Saturday 11.00am to 5.30pm. And at other times by appointment on 02 6232 9411.

Workshop Bilk opened in its present location in 2002. Helen Aitken-Kuhnen and Johannes Kuhnen formed the company Workshop Bilk seven years ago. The name Workshop Bilk reflects the name of the suburb in Düsseldorf where they had their first workshop together in 1978. The new Workshop Bilk surpasses all previous incarnations.

Workshop Bilk is now situated on the edge of Canberra, in the industrial area of
West Queanbeyan. It occupies an existing factory space of 180 square metres, which has been entirely gutted, redesigned and refurbished. The renovation of the factory space benefited enormously from the experience of Helen Aitken-Kuhnen and Johannes Kuhnen as artists, as makers, as teachers and as studio/workshop managers.

Workshop Bilk has been purpose-built to provide a gallery, workshops, teaching space, office and living accommodation. It is the kind of renovation more common to inner city Melbourne. It represents what can be achieved with existing building stock and points towards a more dynamic future for industrial areas on the outskirts of Canberrra.

The workshops and studios are fitted out for gold and silversmithing, enamelling and kilnformed glass making. The fitout reflects the areas of expertise of the shareholder artists.
